This is the place where you can personalize your profile!
But, how?
By moving, adding and personalizing widgets.
You can drag and drop to rearrange.
You can edit widgets to customize them.
The bottom has widgets you can add!
Some widgets you can only access when you get a premium membership.
Some widgets have options that are only available when you get a premium membership.
We've split the page into zones!
Certain widgets can only be added to certain zones.
"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!
Now go forth and astound us all with your devious profiles!
Okay. I'm just going to warn you right now - this is sort of a rant journal. NO names will be named, and I'm not trying to point fingers at anyone. These are just MY observations; don't get all worked up and excited like Poet (my horse) when she hasn't been out in a while. xD
Because I'm not personally into digital equine art, this tracing drama doesn't really affect me. So I hope this journal can give you a slightly different perspective on the situation, as most journals are from people specializing in the digital art world. I'm a photo manipulator and proud of it!
Tracing
First off, let's talk about these recent weeks. If you go search the journals, and type in "Tracing", 90% of them will be from members of the equine community here. What does that say to me?
It says that tracing has become a HUGE problem here on deviantART. And that we have some very, very opinionated people in the EC. Which is fine. But what really bugs me about this whole thing is the fact that people are getting so... passionate about the thing, to the point where "wars" on tracing have been started, or people are being sent out on witch-hunts.
I don't think that's the correct way to deal with it. How about this? If you see art that has been traced, and it pisses you off THAT much, why not just calmly note them? There is NO need to get all worked up about it.
To be honest, I'm completely neutral in this whole "war" on tracing. Who cares if someone traces? Who cares if they said that they referenced instead of traced? It doesn't affect ME or MY ART in any way, so I just walk on by.
I personally think that some of these people are getting so mad because their art is not as popular as some traced art. And they probably feel that that's unfair, because they put so much effort into making a picture from scratch, and it's unappreciated, whereas someone else can just trace something and get a ton of views!
Popularity
Which brings me to my next point. The popularity contest in the EC! I know there are many people who do this for the love of horses and art. But at the same time, many other people just want the pageviews and watchers. They follow the trends in the hopes that they will attract more viewers. And you know what? I'll admit it - I did the same thing my first 2 years on dA. For example: When I first joined, I wanted to be JUST like ~devils-horizon. I loved her art, her concepts, and her style. But as time when on, I started to... not idolize her so much. I started becoming happy with MY work, and I did not feel the need to compare it to hers, or anybody else's. I'm now in a place where I am perfectly content with my art, and I couldn't care less if I had 10 watchers or 1,000. I just wish more people felt the same way.
Groups
NEXT POINT: Group drama!
I've seen this so many times I can't even count. Person A wants to be a contributor, and submits an application. Person B, C, and D kindly and respectfully give there reasons for declining. Person A gets all pissy and huffy, and then runs around screaming "Oh, I didn't even want to be a part of your group anyway! Elite groups are stupid." WTF? You're the one who wanted to be a contributor, so you got critique! Get over it.
Same with deviations - if you're able to submit a piece of artwork, we obviously see potential in you and your art because we made you a contributor! So when we give you critique, we WANT you to improve! We WANT to help you succeed! Of course people are going to have different opinions on what's good and what's bad, but just take ALL of those opinions in stride! The good and the bad, the respectful and the rude. Thank them for considering and move on!
This has even happened with the group's FOUNDER! I need to say this - just because you're a founder, does NOT mean that you're exempt from getting critiqued! Like I said above, opinions will differ, but as the founder, you should know this and be mature about it to set a good example. I just... I don't know. It baffles me.
Alright. I think I'm done for now. I just needed to get that off my chest. If I offended anyone, I'm sor- oh, wait. No, I'm not. I shouldn't have to apologize for MY opinion. So if I offended anyone, maybe you shouldn't have read this journal. I gave you a warning, and you left it unheeded.
Anyway, if you read all of that, I commend you. Have a cookie. Thanks for reading! If you disagree with me, that's fine. Just remember, if you comment: I keep my corner of dA nice and civil, and I'd like it to stay that way.
It's March 14th which means it's that time of the year again and your special day is here! We hope you have an awesome day with lots of birthday fun, gifts, happiness and most definitely, lots of cake! Here's to another year!
